When it comes to raising girls, there's a lot of pressure to get it right. We want our daughters to grow up feeling confident and capable, and it's an ongoing journey as a parent to instill these beliefs.
Girls seem to be at a disadvantage compared to boys, according to research on this subject.
Between ages eight and 14, girls’ confidence levels drop by 30%. And by the age of 14, girls experience their lowest levels of self-assurance, 27% lower than boys report at the same age. (source: Teen Girls Are Less Confident Than Boys & It’s Affecting Their Futures)
So as parents, we need to start early to fight this trend. How can we help our little girls feel good about themselves and build self-confidence?
Here are some tips for raising strong women:
1. Be a Role Model. One of the best ways to promote confidence in our daughters is to model it ourselves. As a mom, show them that you're comfortable in your own skin and that you love yourself just the way you are.
2. Encourage Their Unique Qualities. Teach them to celebrate their own uniqueness and to value themselves for who they are inside, not what they look like.
3. Give Her a Voice. Encourage your daughter to pursue her passions and to stand up for what she believes in. Help her to find her voice and to use it confidently. Teach her that it's okay to be different and that she can influence those around her and the world.
4. Be Positive. Finally, praise your daughter for her accomplishments, big and small. A little positive reinforcement can go a long way in helping her to feel good about herself. Let her know that you're proud of her and that she can do anything she sets her mind to!
It's incredibly important for parents to give their children confidence. It's been shown time and again that children who feel good about themselves are more likely to succeed in life than those who don't. Furthermore, teaching children to be confident from a young age will help them carry this feeling with them throughout their lives.
